Responsive Web Design

The huge shift in web access from desktop to mobile has resulted in a major re-think among the web design community. Though most of us still use our desktop computers, access to the internet increasingly comes via a smartphone or tablet.

Designing sites that are accessible and readable on both desktop and mobile devices is a challenge that must now be faced by progressive web designers.

Thanks to the forward thinking developers of my main design framework, Catalyst, I have been able to shift my thinking and focus to create sites that are accessible on all devices. There are still minor glitches because of so many different device formats…i.e. iPhone versions, Android versions, Windows phone versions, Apple and Android tablet versions, etc. But these are indeed minor inconveniences, and sites designed now are functional on all versions of all devices.

This has been a challenging but fun learning process. Never a dull moment in the web development experience!

The Wayback Machine takes “snapshots” of websites from their beginning and occasionally throughout history. I occasionally return to previous iterations of my site for comparison and evaluation – and just fun. Here is one of the first versions of Clearwater Landscapes, from 1999. Though many of the links are outdated, the basic idea and design remains.

I recently completed a video for the Vitronics Soltec company, which manufactures machines that automatically solder complete circuit boards in one pass. The technology is fascinating, even for my right-brain consciousness. I shot the video at Esterline Technology in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Here’s the machine (about 12 feet long) and a circuit board rolling out.
